Poetic Thursdays features open mic, a DJ and exhibitions by some of the country’s leading performers. As a poetry platform, with over 500 performances since its inception, the brand acts as a medium for expression. Poetic Thursdays contributes to Soweto’s cultural scene by showcasing artists from all over the country and all walks of life.


This month’s show will feature Wandile Anele Rusi, (known as WAR), an award winning Poet specializing in recording and performance poetry who is also a published Playwright and Theatre creative. War has recorded 2 studio albums, featuring poems on soulful beats and Afrocentric gems, some of them featuring vocalists, the albums are Words of WAR (2015) and Raw Material (2018). His work is widely available via all digital stores, focusing on raw poetry, based on real life stories of a black child, aimed at invoking the warrior of light, courage and oneness with us all. WAR considers himself a messenger of the word.

Born in the Free State in 1982 is second headliner known as Mandela who has been sharpening his skills since his primary school days where he was part of the schools’ boys’ choir. Today he is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, guitarist & pianist & has had the privilege to travel around South Africa expressing his Raw African soul music that’ identifies heavily with township Life. Mandela has shared stages with the like of Mxo, Berita Soul just to mention a few.

Last but not least is Poet Andile aka Zulu Chama, born in Kwa Thema, Kwa Zulu Natal. Zulu Chama is a well-travelled South African poet who was once at the helm of izigi ze mbongi -a traditional poetry show on Ukhozi FM. Zulu has not only wowed audiences in this country working alongside theatrical giants like Mbongeni Ngema, Mzwakhe Mbuli and Mak Mananaka but he has reached international audiences all the way in Turkey ,Europe & France. Many might recognize his face from SACB news where he was a resident Poet & he continues to explore the theatre and television field.
