Weekender – All That Jazz

Weekender – All That Jazz

“To me, Miriam was just an ordinary girl—a novice. Ons was die ouens then—the real guys—thing of that nature. You’ll forgive me for my English.

Miriam was not that attractive—I mean, curves and all that jazz. I think our first concert with Miriam was somewhere in the East Rand—singing negro spirituals, you know. But still, I was not yet impressed, maybe because I was so influenced by this Negro guy— Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker.” - Kippie Moeketsi

Kwaito music is inescapable in this Mzansi. It is ours. A creation that was and continues to be authored by the Black Lived Experience, and it engages Black Life. In Kwaito, we have a national treasure. A monument to the Township, and to Black Life.

I want ‘Thandwa Ndim’ to bring strength and courage to women who feel that they are trapped in toxic situations,” says Amanda Black of a song that she wrote after seeing a news report of yet another South African woman killed by her partner. “I want these women to understand that they are not alone and that they are truly loved.”
