Nakambe

The Market Theatre Company presents the work of their alumni and award-winning playwright, actor and director, Thabiso T Rammala’s (Tau) passionate and probing new play - Nakambe.

Nakambe is a tale that sifts through traditional African authority, challenging its norms and expectations by a princess named Nakambe. The story follow’s Princess Nakambe’s path to glory and the throne which intermittently gets stifled by wily men and their outdated version of black rule and dominion. One of their core objections to her rule is the refusal to allow women from sitting on the throne. Examples of objection to female rule are aplenty in South Africa’s traditional councils with many cases resolved through the highest courts.

Rammala brings this thrillingly fierce and heartfelt piece of theatre about identity, culture, patriarchy and matriarchy at a time when the country’s politics are evolving and gender injustice slowly becomes a focal point.

The narrative sees a king who finds himself in a “predicament” wherein his wife bores him a daughter instead of a son and heir. All of this pits him against forces who refuse to be led by a female within his own ranks and subjects. After his death, Nakambe has to navigate against the same forces who feel emboldened by the king's death to dislodge her from her throne.

Thabiso T Rammala directs a phenomenal cast that comprises, Relebohile Mabunda, Khanyisile Ngwabe, Muzi Mtshali, James Mankgaba, Lunga Khuhlane, Darlington Khoza and Princess Tshabangu.

Searingly fresh and fast-paced, Nakambe celebrates the courage it takes to confront inherent norms and injustices women have faced in the name of preserving culture, tradition and patriarchy.
