This heritage month, the South African State Theatre’s (SAST) online programme presents Season 05, which will be headlined by the award-winning Jazz sensation, Zoë Modiga -in a virtual music concert- as well as the culture and heritage enthusiast, and revered musician Mbuso Khoza, performing Amahubo In Concert.

Stacey Fru certainly seems poised to follow in the footsteps of many of her iconic predecessors, including doyens such as Nontsizi Mgqwetho, Noni Jabavu, Bessie Head, Miriam Tlali, Ellen Kuzwayo, Gcina Mhlophe and Sindiwe Magona. The latter two have undoubtedly noted with pride the blossoming of this young writer.

We can appreciate the power of a documentary to express the truth, but this film falls short in explaining the condition of Blackness during South Africa’s tumultuous transition to democracy. A focus on the factual accounts of violence, backed up by archival material and interviews from primary sources, is helpful. But overall, it fails in the same area as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
