This book is for readers who are interested in the vogue debates on constitutionalism which have now taken center stage, since the publication of the opportunistic opinion piece on the constitution by Lindiwe Sisulu and the recent claims that the judiciary is corrupt.

"Dodging the Civil War Bullet" by Sello Lediga is an impeccable narrative that reads like a documentary flashback. It is suffused with accurate dates, names, and a robust sense of the socio-political atmosphere from the colonial-apartheid era of the 1600s until the 1990s.

This fugitive nature of Black life under a brutally racist regime necessitated, even for the most law-abiding Black subject, a certain flexibility and alertness without which mere survival would be severely compromised.

White supremacy does not need apartheid. This is why white supremacy has outlived the regime of apartheid under liberal constitutional democracy in the current so-called new South Africa.

The book posits that land reform must follow the rule of law thus reinforces the hegemony of the final constitution and white settler constitutionalism. Tembeka (2021:7) reasons that “my argument is that it is time to take the Constitution off the shelf.

Scholarship on Black Consciousness in the so-called post-apartheid South Africa is not as prominent as its counterpart within the Congress tradition. The fundamental reason for this is the hegemony and pervasiveness of whiteness and its aversion to the Black Radical Tradition.

Set in East London, South Africa in the late 1990s, the protagonist Bokang Damane, typical of any teenager, is a dreamer, sketcher and a loner. Of course physical appearance can be deceiving; internally Bokang is dealing with heavy psychological and emotional issues.
