This spring, Joburg will groove to the rhythm of jazz unleashed as the city celebrates the 22nd Standard Bank Joy of Jazz. Africa’s premier jazz festival takes place from 26-28 September 2019, where we look to connect people beyond age, gender and genres. Jazz lovers will be reintroduced to the music, while novices will discover the magic of jazz. At its best, jazz is free, fun, and unleashed.

Mpho Sebina returns to Untitled Basement for her 2nd date this year. Thus far in 2019 Mpho was in studio creating new material, she's completed a scholarship in Berlin by Goethe Institut and Pop Kultur festival "Goethe Talents" with artists from around the globe and performed at Monarch, Berlin, Shop Accra and Republic Bar in Accra, The Okavango music fest in the Okavango Delta in Botswana and her recent private gig in Joburg, the Silent Concert at Nirox Sculpture Park.

The Mother of all Eating (… and the looting continues!)

Zakes Mda’s satirical masterpiece set in Maseru, Lesotho (and first performed at the Sechaba Hall of the Victoria Hotel in Maseru in 1992), explores the debilitating culture of corruption and greed known as ‘eating’. A culture which has become synonymous with corrupt state officials who enrich themselves by abusing government funds.



Using indigenous poetic forms such as izibongo, izisho, amahubo and chants, the wanderer turns to the source for a way forward. To celebrate the going back to the source theme of Umkhondo, Sabelo Soko is joined by two exciting wordsmiths from his hometown eMkhondo, Kazii_M and CooleGun.



In 1971 Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa introduced the people of Soweto to uNosilimela. The play was first performed on a stoep, outside Mutwa’s Diepskloof house. Mutwa turned had his matchbox house into a theatre on Saturdays. The children's room was cleared for actors and props.
